May Theme and Poem: “Prize”

We have been choosing a theme every month for our Giants & Pilgrims “Almanac”. We’re hoping the pages we’re posting each around these themes enliven your season, enrich your days and bring focus to where you’re at in the month. It’s been doing that for Betony and I.

May’s theme is “prize”. For us, it always feels like May is a big push of business before the season of summer hits. It’s good to know what you’re racing for; keeping your mind on the prize… Here’s a poem fleshing out those ideas in broad, not-too-obvious ways.

PRIZE

May is a finish line

The last push for the work in the fields,
tired hands planting the final seeds

So the school year has closure
the wedding planning is about done

the spring season brings
projects to an end
and people look to summer traveling

Because go, go, go is best followed with

rest

and a sense of completion,
a Voice that says job well done,
and permission to breathe deeply

THE ALBUM IS HERE

Almanac No. 1 is a three part project: a series of 12 paintings, a 12 month publication, and a 12 song album.

After months of writing songs that attempt to strike to the core of life, then months in the studio capturing and arranging and creating moments with those songs, then months of mixing and balancing and bringing out the right and specific feel for each… THE ALBUM IS HERE!

Here is the digital release. Take a listen, buy the album, share the album with friends, family, enemies, and frienimies.

“Distance”

A love poem for my wife, Betony.

“Distance”

My Love, there is a distance between us

The same found between all of us
Space, void from one to the next

And you know,
You and I have chosen to close the distance

To draw near each other
to know and to be known
lessening the gap between
two such people

It’s within the distance
there is fertile ground
to struggle, dig, anticipate
bare fruit

This space pushes, pulls, quakes
grows, prunes, and grows again

And You and I
have given ourselves over to this endeavor
to let it drive
and nurture us

the rest of our days.

Without it there would be
You and I
without
the birth of us
without the birth of

Love,
distance’s gift

And I am thankful,
for You and I

my Love

I’m thankful for us

Our January Almanac theme: “Begin”

Each month as Giants & Pilgrims creates all the content and stories and art for  Almanac No. 1, a theme will be chosen that resonates with the month and the place we find ourselves in this year. For January our theme is “Begin”.
begin

January is a blank canvas. A snowy field. Untouched clay.

Now is the time to reflect and be resolute again.

The resolutions we make now guide and direct our new year.

So here’s to new beginnings.

May the fresh start find you this season.

And now

we

Begin

Beginning “Almanac No. 1”

This is a project a year in the making. And one that’s close to Betony and I’s heart.

January of last year Betony and I talked about doing an art project together; one that would involve music, paintings, and anything else we felt was worth doing. What resulted was a big work we’re calling “Almanac No. 1”.

We did a successful Kickstarter in the fall and now we are releasing a monthly subscription, a series of paintings, and an album. All this will be found here in the coming months, slowly, like a good garden.

As for the publication, we are full of subscribers for the year, but plan on making this site a place to engage in the rhythms of our Almanac. As for the paintings, a full gallery will be posted in February. As for the album, we are doing pre-sales in January with a digital release January 18th!

Thank you for all of your support. We hope this art, music, and adventure enriches your whole year with the same goodness we’ve experienced in making it!
