It’s a new year!!

A friend shared this poem from Lucille Clifton yesterday and it spoke to me.

i am running into a new year

i am running into a new year
and the old years blow back
like a wind
that i catch in my hair
like strong fingers like
all my old promises and
it will be hard to let go
of what i said to myself
about myself
when i was sixteen and
twentysix and thirtysix
even thirtysix but
i am running into a new year
and i beg what i love and
i leave to forgive me

—Lucille Clifton (1936-2010)

I appreciate the part where the poet speaks to her past ages. We are each full of so many versions of our own selves. How can we get to know and understand others when we are such vast mysteries to our own minds sometimes? Do the work friends. Clear the clutter. Wake up early and climb the mountain. It takes the time it takes.

By the end of a year, I often fill bogged down by too much everything. But it’s the excess of the holidays that makes the contrast of January feel like crisp clear air. We get to start anew. Clear the table and begin fresh.

Happy New Year friends!

October 2021 Free Wallpaper

Double double toil and trouble!! Welcome to the spookiest month of the year. Hopefully this wallpaper puts you in an October mood! I enjoyed weaving the connections between the imagery – delicate webs, to antique lace, to the glow of a candle, to the sliver of the moon I saw on my walk this morning. I particularly like how the iphone wallpapers coordinate with the desktop this time (that check pattern is very similar to my grandmother’s cloth napkins we used when we were kids!). Makes me feel a little nostalgic. By the way, in case you were wondering, our theme for this month is “Core” – like getting to the heart of things, and staying centered.

Happy Haunting everyone!

Harvest Moon Playlist and More

Tonight is the harvest moon so we thought it was high time to make a new autumn “Moon” themed playlist. I love how old-fashioned and mellow this mixtape is. Enjoy!

And, just for fun, here is our Harvest Moon themed table/art/reading for the day. Lots of these inspired by the book “Exploring Nature” with Children by Lynn Seddon which I have been loving.

And finally a Poem for the evening –

The Harvest Moon by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

It is the Harvest Moon! On gilded vanes
And roofs of villages, on woodland crests
And their aerial neighbourhoods of nests

Deserted, on the curtained window-panes
Of rooms where children sleep, on country lanes

And harvest-fields, its mystic splendour rests!

Gone are the birds that were our summer guests,

With the last sheaves return the labouring wains!

All things are symbols: the external shows

Of Nature have their image in the mind,
As flowers and fruits and falling of the leaves;

The song-birds leave us at the summer’s close,

Only the empty nests are left behind,
And pipings of the quail among the sheaves.

December Calendar Free Desktop and iPhone Wallpaper

December’s palette is gray and white. Outside all the world has faded to these shades. Snow has come. The color is in the subtlety. I believe that it’s inside the house, the hearth, that embodies December. Inside we gather together around warmth and goodness. We bake cookies, sing, and wait with eager anticipation for Christmas holidays and the new year.
To dig into December, read this simple poem, make these perfect cookies,  and listen to this angelic playlist.
