It’s a new year!!

A friend shared this poem from Lucille Clifton yesterday and it spoke to me.

i am running into a new year

i am running into a new year
and the old years blow back
like a wind
that i catch in my hair
like strong fingers like
all my old promises and
it will be hard to let go
of what i said to myself
about myself
when i was sixteen and
twentysix and thirtysix
even thirtysix but
i am running into a new year
and i beg what i love and
i leave to forgive me

—Lucille Clifton (1936-2010)

I appreciate the part where the poet speaks to her past ages. We are each full of so many versions of our own selves. How can we get to know and understand others when we are such vast mysteries to our own minds sometimes? Do the work friends. Clear the clutter. Wake up early and climb the mountain. It takes the time it takes.

By the end of a year, I often fill bogged down by too much everything. But it’s the excess of the holidays that makes the contrast of January feel like crisp clear air. We get to start anew. Clear the table and begin fresh.

Happy New Year friends!

June 2021 Free Wallpaper and Playlist

Our calendar this next month is filled with camps, road trips, summer projects, and family visits. And I couldn’t be more happy about it. Our pool opened yesterday and at 8 a.m. the kids were already in their swimsuits ready to dive in (even though it was only 50 degrees and didn’t open until noon ha ha ). I love the enthusiasm and lightness of June days. Our theme for this month is “Play” and that is my wish for you – that you wake up filled with excitement and that you find moments to just play. Happy June friends!

March 2021 Free Wallpaper and Playlist

March is here friends. Since fall, I have been getting up early each weekday morning at 6 and taking a very chilly walk around our park. I make myself a cup of cinnamon tea and bundle up in all my layers. The last three months have been very dark and very cold. But this morning, for the first time, it was just a little bit light out when I left the house. And by the time I got back the sun was fully up and the birds were singing. A change is coming.

If you have been around me for a while, you probably know how I feel about March. I truly dread it every year because something terrible always seems to happen in March (it’s those darn ides…). But this time I plan on squaring my shoulders and facing whatever the pruning brings. I am going to do my best to search out spring even if it isn’t quite ready to find me.

Our theme for the month is “Song”. It is about finding those moments of beauty and poetry amidst the end of winter and singing. Love you friends. Keep on keeping on.

This month’s playlist is themed “Song”. It is full of Irish sea shanties, ballads, and songs that make you want to get up and dance. Enjoy!!

November 2020 Free Desktop & iPhone Wallpaper

We spent the last several days at my parents farm in Kansas. Living in the middle of the prairie, a few years ago their farm was devastated by a huge grass fire. Although everything is coming back in the way nature does, my father has spent the last three years strategically planting hundreds of oak trees. He is living out that famous adage “plant trees in whose shade you will never sit under.” November feels like that to me – a quieter, less assuming month that is about honoring and sharing traditions that will give back for generations to come.

September 2020 Desktop & iPhone Wallpaper

We just got back from a family trip to visit the coastal redwoods in Northern California for the first time. The minimal color palette of the forest, the smell of the needles and the fog, the peaceful immensity of the trees, all of these things have been resting in my sub-conscience and filling up my inner wells. Hopefully this forest-inspired wallpaper can bring a little of that feeling to your spaces as well. Thank you all for your continued love and care for our family and artwork. Happy September! – Betony

June 2020 Desktop & iPhone Wallpaper

When we were kids, I remember going hiking in the Colorado wilderness and my dad teaching us how elevation maps worked. We would unroll the plastic coated guide throughout our adventure and watch how the landforms under our feet mirrored the fine lines on the map, leading us to new worlds.

June is a month when I want to get out and explore those landforms of the world. And maybe you are in a place where that is possible right now. And maybe you are not. But we can all still find little worlds to adventure into even if they are as small as a window box outside our door. It’s all about noticing – about how little steps can slowly climb a mountain.

January 2020 Desktop Wallpaper

Welcome to the new year my friends! This morning the first thing I did was step out on our balcony and take a deep breath of the morning air. And that is my hope for you today – that you would pause to inhale deeply and enjoy the freshness of this new day, this new year.

December 2019 Desktop Wallpaper

This wallpaper is created from a commissioned painting I completed last month. The painting is titled “There is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in” which is from a Leonard Cohen song. I thought it the perfect ode to December as these days are darkening but we celebrate the lights.

Because I grew up on an apple orchard, I get so excited about the onset of fruit picking season. It is one of my very favorite seasons. As farmer’s market stands start to showcase the fruits of their labor, something in me starts to celebrate right along with them. I don’t have any fruit trees at our new house (yet), but I have a secret map of fruit tree locations around town that are on public property, abandoned parking lots, or back alleys that I sneakily (ha ha) frequent as their apples and other fruits start to ripen. This wallpaper is inspired by all of you teachers and students heading back to school and also you apple-picking sisters and brothers.

Much love, Betony
