The artist borrows several conventions with historical weight to represent the angel visiting Mary: the rose, the moon, even the color blue have been associated with Mary’s iconography for centuries. Notice the bird imagery hovering around Mary, evoking the Holy Spirit and notice just how young Mary is, embarking on this enormous life change at probably 12-14.
